Academia raises £16m Series D to accelerate the world’s research
Academia, a platform for sharing academic research, has raised £16 million in Series D funding from Tencent and other investors.
Academia’s mission is to accelerate the world’s research. Richard Price, the founder of Academia.edu, had the idea for the company when finishing his PhD at Oxford in philosophy.
While in the early days the growth in users and papers uploaded was linear, to date 175 million users have joined Academia.edu, and around 140,000 people join Academia.edu daily. Academics have uploaded 28 million papers, and 71 million academics, professionals, and students read papers on Academia every month.
Robert Whitby-Smith, Partner AlbionVC said:
Congratulations to Richard and the wider Academia team on their latest fundraise. This important milestone is testament to the importance of their mission to accelerate the world’s research.
